Kevin McCarthy '85CC, '91GSAS, of the Columbia Career Coaches Network,
reflects on recent life advice he gave his sons.

After little sleep last night I woke up this morning and struggled to find ways to explain to my two teenage sons that character still counts, that a good man is ultimately defined by his actions and they are still expected to do the right thing because it is the right thing, not because it might bring attention, fame or wealth.

This week is the third and final installment of StorySpace @ Columbia from the Office of University Life. If you haven’t heard Part I or Part II, go listen to them! We’ll wait.

But here’s a quick refresher:

StorySpace @ Columbia is a new storytelling project that presents personal and inspiring stories from students across Columbia.

Today, we wrap up the theme of identity with stories about perseverance, confronting challenges, and finding inspiration in unusual places.

Not everyone has a Broadway hit based on their lives (Hamilton), or a hashtag trending on Twitter (#NotoriousRBG) like some Columbia alumni, but your professional stature can be enhanced and amplified greatly through developing and honing your personal brand.

In 1997, Betsy Kalin '91CC formed Itchy Bee Productions, a full-service production and distribution company, specializing in high-quality films that entertain, educate, and inspire. The director received a BA in Women's Studies from Columbia College and an MFA in Directing from the University of Miami.

Kalin recently completed a nine-year-long film project, East LA Interchange. CAA Arts Access spoke with Kalin about this undertaking.
